Maurice and Me

I love Maurice Sendak. I love his books and his drawings. I also love the way he thought. I agree wholeheartedly with him when it comes to childhood, what kids can handle, and how we all survive, even into adulthood.

This animated interview from several years ago is very cool, a little weird, and says everything about Sendak's viewpoint.

"I still think the same way I thought as a child. I still worry. I'm still frightened... Nothing changes."
- Maurice Sendak

Scary Stories

One of my favorite book series when I was young was Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. The series was notorious for the haunting and grotesque pictures illustrated by Stephen Gammel -- so notorious, in fact, that the books were once the most banned children's books in America. I remember reading these stories aloud to my friends and family and making myself nauseous with fear. For some reason, I thought that was a good thing!

There's a new documentary about this series that is coming out soon, and I can't wait to see it!

Here's the trailer:

Have you read these books? Do they scare you as much as they scared me? Which story is your favorite? (Mine is The Babysitter!)
